She CHAPTER 15 Beijing, China, 1530 Shao Jun and Qiu Ju continue their fight, with Jun now switching to her trusted sword. Realising that her martial prowess may struggle to overcome him, she uses her rope dart to grab a large bell on the ceiling. Using her weight, she manages to dislodge the bell, causing it to fall and trap Qiu Ju below it. The fire starts to intensify, and parts of the roof start to collapse, further trapping the Templar below the rubble. Jun and Qijie elect to flee, leaving Qiu Ju to his fate as the entire pavillion erupts into flames. Yokohama, Japan, 2020 Lisa awakens from her Animus session. She suggests she needs to take a break to avoid any side effects, which enrages Doctor Kagami as she demands to know where Lisa has heard of this. She states that they are so close to the secrets of Shao Jun, that they cannot stop now. The Doctor brandishes a gun, informing Lisa that the door is locked and that she cannot escape. CHAPTER 16 Yokohama, Japan, 2020 Meanwhile, outside Mari calls Kiyoshi, concerned that she seemingly cannot contact Lisa. Fearing the worst, Kiyoshi tells her he will come and pick Mari up immediately. Near to Beijing, China, 1532 Shao Jun trains in a forest with Xiao Hu. The latter gives a report to Jun, telling her that they have not heard about Zhang Yong and the Precursor Box in some time. Their scouts have been reported as being present along the Great Wall, alongside multiple Upon arriving, the two assassins quickly scale the wall and dispatch of some guards who were keeping lookout. They uncover a message from Zhang Yong ordering to open the guard doors across the Wall, thus inviting the Mongols to an easy access through to China. Knowing that an invasion is inevitable, the two assassins attempt to run from door to door to close them. As they do so, they look up to see none other than Zhang Yong himself standing atop the wall. CHAPTER 17 The Great Wall, Mongol Border, China – 1532 Yokohama, Japan, 2020 Doctor Kagami shouts in frustration, appalled that the trail for the box has apparently now run cold. She thinks back to the failed experiments at the Madrid facility in 2016, and how Ellen Kaye had sent her back to Japan to recuperate. Kaye had also taken her Shao Jun research, giving it to another Abstergo division. Kagami ultimately admits that she is trying to recreate her own research with Lisa. The latter overhears these admissions, and is disappointed that the Doctor views her as nothing more than something to be used for her own self interests. CHAPTER 18 Yokohama, Japan, 2020 Outside of the Abstergo building, Mari and Kiyoshi make their way to the entrance. The latter reveals that he has contacted a nearby Inside, Lisa admonishes Kagami for using her. The Doctor admits she views Lisa with disdain anyway, looking upon her as a loser. Lisa is angered and her world view of the Templars now reflects that of her ancestor, Shao Jun. She immediately attacks the staff around her, the Bleeding Effect having granted her the combat capabilities of Jun. Disarming a gun from one guard, she turns it upon Kagami. Kiyoshi and Mari barge into the room to find this situation. Lisa is relieved to see them, and tells the Doctor that whilst she did feel a loser, having seen Shao Jun's life she now knows what she is capable of and what she wants to do with her life. Kiyoshi states to the Doctor that once word gets out that the clinic had been forcing people into an Animus to false claims of “cures”, her reputation will be finished. Lisa shoots her gun at the machines around the lab, further ending the research. Lisa, Kiyoshi and Mari all quickly leave the building together. Outside they find several Assassins, led by the Elder - Saeko Mochizuki. She is pleased to see that everyone survived and asks Lisa if she would be interested in joining the Brotherhood, to which she confirms she would. Mari also wishes to join to help out. Saeko reveals that Shao Jun's box remains unaccounted for to this day, and should Lisa wish to continue that search then she still has her whole life ahead of her to find it. Assassin Refuge, China – 1532 The Mentor Shao Jun, looks out over the horizon. She is joined by Xiao Hu, her apprentice now a fully grown man and true trained Assassin. He thanks her for all of her help and training. He also states that he will now make his way to his homeland of Japan, where he will continue her teachings of the Creed and establish his own Brotherhood there. Analysis and Final Thoughts
And so ends this series. Shao Jun has always been one of my favourite Assassins, so overall I did enjoy to see more of her in this title. However, the final few issues do end on a bit of a disappointing and somewhat confusing point. For those who recall our review of the first issue, I made the point that the search for a “secret treasure” had been left pretty non-specific from the outset. I was also slightly perplexed on the possibility of it actually being the Precursor Box itself, but in the end that's exactly all it was. However, that now leaves us with yet more questions surrounding the established canon. The status of Shao Jun's Precursor Box has been a bone of contention amongst fans for many years. We initially thought that the Precursor Box present in Assassin's Creed Rogue (the “Shay” box if you will) and the one entrusted to Jun by Ezio Auditore in Assassin’s Creed Embers were one and the same. This was later dispelled by the writer of the game, Richard Farrese, who said they were not actually the same box. Years passed, until in 2017 Ubisoft eventually officially confirmed in a Reddit AMA that Jun's and Shay's box were indeed the same. Following that though, the official book “Assassin's In short, the exact canon of Shao's box remains a bit of a mystery. By all accounts, Shay's box ended up as part of the Phoenix Project, and remains destroyed or buried in deepest Australia, as shown in the Assassin’s Creed Uprising comics. However, if Jun's box truly is distinct, then the conclusion of this comic could indeed indicate that it does remain out there to be found. I do find it a bit of a shame that the various Shao Jun materials we have received in the past few years have not had a stricter following of the previously established canon of the Chronicles games and Embers. As is typical of the transmedia releases these days, they do seem to just be doing their own thing without any specific lore checking, which is a shame when the likes of Star Wars and Marvel comics do such a better job in this area. Still, it is a nice thought to know that Lisa is out there as a fully trained modern day Shao Jun, and I for one would love to see her as our new Modern Day protagonist – especially if this gained us a full Shao Jun game set in China, and possibly travelling to Japan as well. The reality is of course that most of the transmedia content rarely sees the light of day in the games. But one can dream.
